Jenny was amazed that the the Netherlands is one of the largest suppliers of pork meat to South Korea, accounting for a quarter of total export volumes from the Netherlands to Korea.
The chart below is based on the shipment data collected from our I-TRADER trade software during November and December shipments from the Netherlands to South Korea in 2022. This data shows the export volumes, prices, exporter, and other related information, and is updated in real-time. Frozen pork meat export volume is 15% of the total export volume from NL to KR.
Jenny sourced pork meat from one of the biggest pork producers in the Netherlands, and the business was quite good until she faces increasing competition from other countries in the export market. The USA has lowered the tax tariff on pork to zero percent between 2013 and 2014, and Spanish Iberico pork is becoming increasingly popular in the Korean market, despite its higher price.
Another complexity was a strict requirements from the client in Korea that even Jenny was dealing with a lot of complex export issues for many years, it was hard to satisfy the client and supplier both.
In addition to the increase of pork import in Korea, the processed meat market in Korea is also annually increasing, and sales volumes of sausages and bacon in Korean market increased between 5 ~ 6 %, while canned ham(Luncheon meat) sales volumes decreased nearly 6% in 2020.
The increased imports of the processed meat mostly comes from increasing home meal replacement(HMR) products market. HMR is very important and interesting market in Korea, and Jenny will write about it at another post.
Korea was the 4th largest importer of pork in the world in 2020, after China, Japan, and Mexico. The Netherlands was the 4th largest exporter of pork to Korea in 2021, after the US, Spain. Due to HPAI outbreaks in the Netherlands, poultry and poultry product exports were suspended for years.
Together with the EU and EU member states, the Netherlands has pushed the Korean government for Regionalization of pork and poultry products. After 3-years of effort, the Korean government has accepted Regionalization. It is a good news for pork and poultry exporters in the Netherlands.
Producers of pork looking to export their product to the Korean market should understand the country's food culture and lifestyle. With an understanding of these factors, it becomes easier to identify the different types of pork products that are in demand in Korea. Additionally, producers should be aware of the various local regulations and certifications that need to be obtained in order to export pork to Korea. Finally, producers must have a reliable and secure means of transporting their product to the Korean market. By following these steps, producers can successfully export their pork products to the Korean market.
